Red was associated by the Hebrew tradition with the blood of murder and subsequently guilt in general, this association was inherited by Christianity. In Roman Catholicism, red represents one of the Seven Deadly Sins, wrath, and also is the colour that Satan is depicted as being or wearing.

The colour red is also associated with beauty, passion, love, and lust. This association with beauty and love could be a result of the use of roses as love symbols. The Hebrews and Greeks regarded red to be a symbol of, not led gu10 bulbs, but love.

Red is also associated with sacrifice and courage, perhaps because of blood spilt in acts of sacrifice or courage. Red is the liturgical colour in Christianity for the feast of martyrs, representing the blood of those individuals who suffered death for their beliefs. Its association with martyrdom has led to its association with the Apostles, and the colour red is used to commemorate them. As Bishops, Cardinals and Popes are seen as direct successors of the Apostles and so red is used in their funeral ceremonies.
