Tom Gunning coined the term ‘truth claim’ to describe the prevalent belief that photographs depict reality accurately. Gunning asserts that this truth claim depends upon both the visual accuracy of photographs and their indexicality. ‘Indexicality’ refers to the physical relationship between the resulting image and the object photographed. Paul Levinson argued for the intrinsic objectivity of the photograph due to the manner in which it is captured. Levinson emphasizes that a photograph is “a literal energy configuration from the real world” due to the chemical process that occurs when a photo is taken. The light sensitive emulsion located on the photographic negative becomes transformed by light that passes first through the lens and then through the diaphragm of the camera. Thus if one were to take a photo of a camera data cable, the ensuing photo would reflect the exact reality of that camera lead. As it is a literal energy configuration of the real world, Levinson believes that photography is free from the awful sin of subjectivity. Lev Manovich argued with the same reasoning for motion pictures. Labelling cinema as the “art of the index”, Manovich asserts that motion pictures’ traditional identity lies in its ability to capture reality.
LED retrofitting simply refers to switching an existing light fixture over to an LED bulb. Depending on where you want to put the LED bulbs and what type they are, retrofitting can be a very simple process or may require you to put in new fixtures with an LED transformer. For home use, the Edison type LED bulbs are generally the easiest way to go because they simply screw in like a standard incandescent light. If you want to put in LED flood lights or LED ceiling lights into an existing fixture, then you may need to purchase a convertor. An important thing to remember about LED ceiling lights is that they use a different power type than fluorescent and incandescent bulbs. The LED bulbs are already fitted with an internal technology which converts this power. However, if you have numerous LED ceiling lights from one power source, then the distribution of power may not be equal. This can result in a reduced lifespan for the LED ceiling lights. To prevent this, you will need an LED transformer which will make sure that the appropriate amount of power is getting to each LED bulb on the chain of lights.
Floriography was a Victorian method of communication via the medium of flowers. Various flowers and floral arrangements were made use of to convey coded messages which would enable individuals to express feelings that they would otherwise not have been able to express. Known as floriography, this method of communication was also known as ‘the language of flowers’. Sadly, much of the language of flowers has been forgotten, though some remnants still do remain. If one were to send some roses via flower delivery manchester for example, the message they are conveying to the recipient is either devotion or friendship. Different colours of roses imply different meanings. White roses suggest chastity and virtue; red roses imply romantic love; pink roses imply affection but not to the extent of a red rose; yellow roses symbolise devotion or friendship. Sunflowers symbolised either respect or haughtiness in the Victorian era which led them to become St. Julie Billiart’s favourite flower. The Iris, named after the messenger of the Gods in Greek mythology, represented the sending of a message, and still does to this day.

Before the advent of gu10 light bulbs, humans had to rely upon candles. Candles are basically solid blocks of wax which have a wick embedded inside. This wick is then lit and provides heat and light. Candles nowadays are made from paraffin but this has not always been the case. Candles have also been known to be made of soy, beeswax, plant waxes, and other such materials. There also exists a wide variety of gel candles which are constructed from polymer and mineral oils. Those who manufacture candles are called chandlers, a rather lovely job title I think. How does a candle work? Basically, the heat of the match which is used to light the candle melts and then vaporizes a small amount of fuel. The fuel combines with oxygen after the vaporization process is complete, this forms a flame. A self-sustaining chain of events permits the candle to keep burning. The chain of events goes as follows: The flame’s heat melts the top of the solid fuel mass, this melted fuel proceeds to move upward via the wick, the melted fuel is subsequently vaporized and burns within the candle’s flame. All rather smart!
